Summer Nights

I watch the lightning from my window

shock the dark sky into brightness,

and for one fractured second

I was blind.

How can one moment

change the heavens 

so bewilderingly?

Like that minute I spent

tasting the outline your body made

against the full moon 

imagining every movement of your smile

tracing the specks of light bursting

from the pupils of your eyes

exploding outwards, 

forming an irresistible abyss

I can’t help but fall into –

as we floated along

the still, unmoving lake

that one, fleeting summer.
