I watch the lightning from my window
shock the dark sky into brightness,
and for one fractured second
I was blind.
How can one moment
change the heavens
so bewilderingly?
Like that minute I spent
tasting the outline your body made
against the full moon
imagining every movement of your smile
tracing the specks of light bursting
from the pupils of your eyes
exploding outwards,
forming an irresistible abyss
I can’t help but fall into –
as we floated along
the still, unmoving lake
that one, fleeting summer.
